From Monarchy to Republic

What is a republic, and when, how, and why did Rome turn into one?

A republic is a form of government in which affairs of state are a public matter, not the private concern of rulers.

In 535-509 BC, king Superbus was hated by mostly everyone because he killed their king. Sextus Raped Lucretia, but she was so ashamed that she committed suicide.  people got mad because of her death so they got all together so they can get Superbus and Sextus. Superbus fled Rome and survived, but Sextus died. Brutus and Collantinus were elected as consuls.

Geography of Rome

Why would Rome have been a good place to found a city?
Why would the Italian Peninsula have been a good place to start an empire?

Rome would have been a good place because its mountainous. The climate is also dry and mild which means it had a good farmland. The city is close to the Mediterranean sea which means they traded.
The Italian peninsula was a good place to start an empire because the Romans could sail to other lands, developing new trade routes.

Greco-Persian Wars

In 499 BC, a great war began between Greek city states and the Persian empire, ruled by Darius. Ionian Greek city states revolted against persian rule and Athens supported them. This caused king Darius to invade Greece in 490 BC, after putting down the earlier Ionian revolt. First, the Greek defeated the Persians at marathon. then, Greek forces, led by spartans and king Leonidas defended the pass at Thermopylae against the onslaught brought by king Xerxes. Then, the persians sacked and burned Athens. They also went to fight the greeks at the strait of salamis. The athenian navy tricked the persians to fight in the narrow strait, where they were destroyed by greek warships that smashed and sunk them. Finally, Greeks ended the was by defeating the Persians at Pataea.
